Best Fiber for Dog Pancreatitis

My 12-year-old Eskie had an acute attack of pancreatitus. After IV treatment in the hospital, he is doing well on a low fat diet. Your advice also states "moderate higg fiber". Is there any problem with approx 1/2 cup a day of cooked oatmeal?

Thank you,

Helen (a canine lover)

Editor Comment Fiber Diet for Dog Pancreatitis

Hi Helen,

Dogs can eat oatmeal, but I worry that if you add it to your dog’s current diet you could create a dietary imbalance.

Reputable dog food manufacturers put a lot of effort into making sure that their products provide the correct amounts of protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals for a dog’s age, lifestyle, and for prescription diets, any medical concerns as well. If you add significant amounts of something else to one of these diets, you risk throwing the whole thing out of whack.

Home-cooked diets can provide complete nutrition for dogs but they need to be carefully designed and balanced if you are going to feed them for more than a week or two. If you are interested in going this route take a look at Petdiets.com and BalanceIt.com.
