Dog With Ugly Deformed Long Curved Nail
by Naomi (reader) and Response From Our Veterinarian
(San Diego, CA)
My dog is at least 10 yrs. old and developed an ugly nail that curves over his other toe. The dog nail is scaly and gross.
The Veterinarian wants to amputate his toe because MAYBE it is cancer. I am uncomfortable with this. Surely there is a test that can be made first. Is there? Should I get a second opinion? (He does have skin problems.)
Suggestion From Our VeterinarianHi Naomi,
It is possible that something other than
cancer could be causing your dog’s abnormal nail (a fungal infection perhaps?), but if your veterinarian is recommending amputation, I would have to guess that he or she is confident that this is the best diagnostic and treatment option available (cancer of the nail bed is quite common in dogs).
That said, it never hurts to get a second opinion. You’ll either find out that you do have other options, which is good, or you’ll feel more confident in moving ahead with the surgery, which is also good.
Regards,
Jennifer
