Hair Loss on Puppy

My 6 month old puppy started scratching his side and hind leg area about 2 weeks ago. When I took him for a walk he would start rolling around in leaves. Then just a week ago I discovered redness and hair loss. Is this an allergy perhaps?

Hi Mary,
Yes, it's possible that your puppy has developed an allergy or skin irritation that is causing him to scratch and lose hair. Some common allergens for dogs include flea bites, food, pollen, and dust mites. Skin irritation can also be caused by other factors such as parasites, fungal infections, or bacterial infections.
It's important to take your puppy to the vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Your vet may perform a skin test or other diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of the redness and hair loss. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve medication, topical treatments, or dietary changes.
In the meantime, you can try to minimize your puppy's exposure to potential allergens or irritants. For example, you can bathe your puppy with a mild, hypoallergenic shampoo, vacuum your home frequently to remove dust and pet dander, and try to avoid letting your puppy come into contact with known allergens such as grass or pollen. Your vet may also recommend an anti-itch medication or other treatments to help relieve your puppy's symptoms.
All the best to you and your pup.
