Should We Get a Second Opinion About Ulcer on Eye?

Reader Question on Eye Ulcer Followed by Suggestion From Our Vet

I recently took my dog to the vet to discover he had an ulcer on his eye. They also told us that said ulcer had caused some problems with his tear duct. They gave us the name of an ophthalmologist a few hours away. We have an appointment scheduled a week from today. A family friend strongly suggested we get a second opinion from a very reputable vet with lots of experience with the eyes in our city. Do you think that would be helpful or a waste of time and money?

Suggestion From Our Veterinarian on the Second Opinion on Eye Ulcers

Hello,

I recommend that you go ahead and keep your dog’s appointment with the veterinary ophthalmologist. This specialist is in the best position to diagnose exactly what is going on with your dog’s eye and put together an effective treatment plan. Even if the veterinarian your friend recommended has experience treating eyes, it is unlikely that he or she has the level of training and expertise that a board-certified ophthalmologist does.

Best of luck,
Jennifer Coates, DVM
